No Remote Experience? No Problem!

Stand Out in a Competitive Remote Job Market.

If you’ve been scrolling through remote job listings and thinking, “Ugh, they all want previous remote experience… how do I even get started?”, I hear you.

And I’ve got good news: you don’t need past remote jobs to land your first one.

Plenty of people (including me!) started with zero remote experience and made it work.

Here’s what helped me, and it can help you make yourself a strong candidate for remote roles, even if you’ve never worked remotely before.

1. You Already Have Remote-Friendly Skills - Your Transferable Skills

Think about it, remote jobs need people who can:

  • Communicate clearly (Slack, emails, async work)

  • Stay organized (self-discipline is huge!)

  • Manage their time (no one is looking over your shoulder)

  • Solve problems independently

Chances are, you’ve already honed these skills in traditional roles, now it’s time to showcase them!

Quick Tip: Use examples like managing a project with minimal supervision or leading a team across different locations.

2. Make Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile Remote-Friendly

If your resume or your LinkedIn profile doesn’t show some remote working aspects, hiring managers might scroll right past it.

Here’s how to make them stand out: List remote tools:

  • Add any tools you've used, like Zoom, Asana, or Slack, to show you're tech-savvy.

  • Remote Work Section: Include a section dedicated to your remote work skills—like your ability to manage tasks independently or work with global teams.

  • Polish your LinkedIn: Add remote projects, request recommendations, and stay active in remote work groups.

  • You need to have a resume and LinkedIn profile that says, “I’m remote-ready and I’m the one you’ve been looking for!”

3. Network Like Your Dream Job Depends on It (Because It Does!)

Did you know that many remote jobs aren’t posted online, they’re shared within communities or networks? So:

  • Join remote-friendly groups on LinkedIn

  • Follow people who advocate for remote work

  • Engage with remote job posts & hiring managers

4. Start Small, Grow Fast

Your first remote job doesn’t have to be your dream job.

Maybe you can start with a freelance gig or a short-term contract.

That’s okay! I started with a 6-month contract.

Each step makes you more experienced, and more hirable.
